If you are looking for a fresh air & fun this summer, look no further than Blueberry Hill Farms in Edom, Texas. What a wonderful place to unplug, unwind, and simply enjoy family time!

We got to the farm about 9:30 AM and it was perfectly cool & breezy. When you go inside they have picking buckets for you to choose from. Brown baskets for blueberries & plastic tubs for blackberries (we did not see this memo until later 🙂

From there, we were left to our own devices… which as you all know, we love! The girls (and moms) were able to roam free and enjoy the morning breeze. There weren’t many ripe blackberries left from the weekend, but PLENTY of delicious blueberries for the taking.

img_7377

The girls genuinely had an amazing time picking berries. They loved being entrusted with picking juicy berries, showing off their picks with pride, and being about to run freely through the rows of bushes!

After we picked to our hearts desire, Lili and I enjoyed a delicious homemade blueberry muffin, under the shade, next to the fan while our cuties played in the sandbox nearby.

The staff is extremely friendly and the owners are especially talented. Every bite that we tasted was mouth watering. We probably could have bought the whole store, given the opportunity! We will most definitely be back!

img_7425

If you have the time after your picking, take an hour to explore Edom’s adorable culture. Homemade pottery, handmade jewelry, antiques, adorable birdhouses, and some delicious down home cooking at The Shed. You are sure to be pleased by exploring this quaint town. Unfortunately, most shops were closed on Monday, but I’m certain during the weekend it is especially alive!

img_7430

We were very proud and excited to eat our delicious homemade pie with fresh blueberries straight from the farm! And it was so scrumptious!

These adorable cuties were SO excited to go see a REAL princess, Snow White! This show is a full-length, contemporary production of the classic fairytale, “Snow White.” The production is part of TJC’s Arts Festival, a month-long celebration of exhibits and performances by TJC students, faculty and staff.

img_6330-2

Let me be the first to admit, I am partial to plays and not much for a show with no words. BUT after this I felt the same emotions that Julia Roberts felt seeing her first Opera in Pretty Woman. It was AWESOME an engaging and we all absolutely loved it!

The show lasts about an hour and a half and has a 15 minute intermission for bathroom breaks! Or in our case….

…..the girls to show off their dance moves they learned by the amazing performers! They both thought that the intermission was the end, and were ecstatic to learn that it was only a break!

Once the show is over, you have the option to buy “picture tickets” for $5 a piece to take pictures with the cast. There was NO WAY I was getting away with not letting them meet Snow White & the hilarious dwarfs!

The characters were all so sweet, kind, engaging and really made the girls feel very very special. Each one asked how the girls enjoyed the performance and what their names where and let them chat for a second or two!

You also got to take pictures if you purchased a book ($10) or doll ($20).

The concession stand offered candy apples, cupcakes, shirts, and more!

img_6356-2

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

  • Tickets go on sale 1 hour before the performance
  • I recommend bringing cash (I had to write a check for tickets)
  • They do accept debit cards at the concession stand, but cash is just easier.
  • Stay for pictures
  • No flash photography during performance
  • Use the restroom before, during intermission or afterwards
  • The show is at Wise Auditorium
  • This is part of a month long celebration, so look for more events!

Heeeelllllooooo adventure!!

If adventure is what you’re looking for, that is exactly what you will find at the Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru in Jacksonville.

img_5348

Tucked back in the woods of Rusk county is a 300-acre preserve, filled with some of the most unique animals you have ever seen. And I can assure you, you have never been this close and personal, haha!

You get a bag of food per person and it seems, no matter how busy the trail is these animals always come for more.

img_5175

THE RULE IS: throw the food out the window so the animals won’t get too close to your car.

….But, it was too hard not to. Especially with these adorable Zebras everywhere!

But, we did get a couple scratches and paint chips from some of the animals so be aware that is can happen.

Abigayle was, of course, much more timid than Seri in the beginning… She has harsh boundaries when it comes to animals. Especially, the GIANT kinds!

However Seri, AKA Dr. Dolittle, was in HEAVEN…

MUST WATCH!

*Disclaimer: We may be considered terrible parents for this video, but the was one of the most hilarious events ever captured in adventure history! And.. no one was harmed in the making of this video.

However, this is a perfect example of how CLOSE these animals will get to you.

Yes.. He’s THAT huge!

img_5333

Not only does the park provide you with food, they also give you a really cool key with the pictures and names of all the animals you’ll see. It’s fun to match the picture to the faces in real life.

Make sure you give yourself AT LEAST two hours to drive thru the safari, and we would really recommend 2.5 hours. Simply because we really enjoyed taking our time and that cut into our picnic after.

*Don’t worry: 1/4 of the way through the trail, there is an option to detour for bathrooms and snacks 🙂

Afterwards, you will have worked up quite the appetite. The reserve has several picnic tables and a cool tipi to play in. You can really spend a whole afternoon here. So even though it is one of the more expensive adventures we’ve taken, it is so worth it!

img_5427

We have to give a special shout-out to Daddy Tutt for taking one for the team, leisurely driving us through the reserve, listening to all of our squeals, staying cool through all of the bull slobber, and not grounding us for the dings on his truck, hehe 🙂 WE LOVE YOU!

Did you know how much you would miss skating rinks? Yea, us either…

When I contacted the sweet owner about going skating last Saturday, she advised us that the 2pm-4pm skating would be quite busy due to three birthday parties. So by the time that we explored Kilgore and ate a delicious (filling) meal, 7:30 was sounding a whole lot like nap time. But we laced up and in no time forgot how tired and full we were!

We are here to tell you skating is just as much fun as you remember! Getting older though… You’re a bit more sore over the next couple days, haha!

We got the girls ready and let them get a feel for the rink before we laced up. They have these awesome “locked” skates for sweet Abigayle, our novice skater. Seri on the other hand is a Roller Skating Boss!

They started in the center circle with the rest of the kiddies just starting out. I think this is an awesome concept, because next to the 10 year old skating professionals the adults were even a bit intimidated, haha!

After a half hour, Seri was zipping around the rink and we decided to let Abi have a try on four rolling wheels..

However.. after much trial, wipeouts, frustration, pep talks, tears & kisses, we threw in the towel and let her have her locked skates back. We were thankful for this option!

Once we all found our stride, there was no stopping us!

They had games like limbo and racing by ages and even a dance party towards the end. I mean kids were actually super excited to be on the rink showing off tricks and not glued to their phones, it was wonderful.

About 9:30 PM they made an announcement that the Snack Bar was closing and would sell the remaining hot dogs for .25 each. As you can see, the girls had worked up another appetite!

One of the best parts about our whole experience was the overwhelming feeling of family and community being here. Everyone knew everyone and they were all so incredibly KIND! Both employees and skaters offered encouragement, tips and kind words to the girls. This is definitely an instance to not judge a book by it’s cover!

Before we left, the owners granddaughter even gave the girls bears that she won from the claw game!

We will most definitely be back!

The Depot Museum in Henderson, Texas is truly a hidden gem! This is exactly the type of place the feeds our adventurous, playful, and out of the ordinary souls.

IMG_9749

Unfortunately, we got to the museum at 3:45 pm and that’s when the sweet ladies informed us that they actually begin locking up and closing down at 4:00 pm because The Depot Museum has ELEVEN buildings to lock up! However, they were kind enough to let us play and explore awhile, thank goodness!

IMG_9771

The first building you walk into is a really cool museum. You can find an antique car, vintage classroom set up, an elegant vanity display, classic music case and loads more!

IMG_9778

The lady that took us around was so incredibly kind and full of fun facts. She told us about this hair curling contraption (haha) that curled your hair in 5 minutes and lasted a month! Hot tools.. what happened?

IMG_9638

The next room we got to explore, was probably the most entertaining for the kiddos. It was a whole room filled with toys, dress up clothes, a club house, music toys, play doh, a puppet theater and much much more. The girls could have easily spent much more time in here, had we had it!

IMG_9762

This room alone is a great place to curb some of your summertime boredom blues. All they ask is that you clean up after yourself which sounds reasonable to us.

Outside the play haven, there are several different shops to explore including, an old doctor’s office, country store and the oldest outhouse in Texas!

IMG_9735

The girls had a blast running around and exploring the different historical markers and asking all sorts of questions.

IMG_9667

We even put them to work a bit, haha! Which at this age, they still love. It is always so nice to be able to explore, touch and see all of these old artifacts. We love being left to our own devices and only wish that we had more time to really explore all of these cool exhibits.

The Carousel

What an amazing perk it was to discover that they have a vintage carousel from the 1960’s that still works! And at $1/per person, you can’t beat that with a stick. They even let us ride twice. As you can tell by these excited faces, our little adventurers had such a blast on the carousel and us moms enjoyed it as well.

While we were there we learned about Henderson’s annual Syrup Festival! This year will mark the 28th annual festival on Saturday, November 12th 9 AM – 5 PM. It occurs all over downtown Henderson and at the Depot Museum as well! There will be old-time syrup making, folk arts, antique tractors & cars, arts & crafts, hay rides, shopping vendors, live music & more! This sounds like all the makings of a great afternoon to us!

*REMEMBER*

  • Come well before 4 PM, because you can easily spend several hours here
  • Bring Cash (although you don’t have to bring much because it is so inexpensive)
  • Camera
  • Water (this Texas heat…)

If you have given up on Green Acres Bowl or had a bad experience the last time you went. Give it another try! They are currently under new management & right away we could tell. Although the building is still dated, it’s understandable that there isn’t a whole lot you can do about that, shy of a complete tear down.

But if you’re looking for some fun & inexpensive family time, The Bowling Alley is a great option!

IMG_9377

I think we can all agree that bowling is more fun with a group of friends! We were joined by our pals, Nate, Lily & Cherish. This dose of healthy competition was full of lots of cheering & laughter.

Although “some” of us were beginners…

They got the gist of it pretty quickly… However, the balls were moving pretty slowly lol

IMG_9375

We did a lot of waiting in anticipation. Partly, to see how many pins got knocked down and partly to see if the ball would make it to the end… haha! And to be honest, it didn’t a couple of times.. But, the friendly staff was there to help us on both occasions, without even asking!

We did “cheat” a bit with the bumpers, however, we never pulled out the “dragon” – Which looks sort of like a slide for your bowling ball ($5 Extra)

ARCADE

IMG_9382

Of course, it wouldn’t be our little adventurers if they didn’t begggggg for something extra and today was no different. The bowling alley has a few arcade games that you can play & naturally, we caved to their demands. Air hockey was our favorite & very intense. The games are a bit expensive (in our opinion) but nothing over $1.

*REMEMBER TO BRING*

  • Socks (Who hasn’t forgotten those infernal socks, once in their life) -they have a machine for backup, but no one wants to pay $6 for socks?
  • Comfy clothes (not a dress, Alyx…)
  • Quarters or $1 bills (they have a change machine)
    • You will need it for both games &&& the juke box!)
  • Friends & family
  • Your good bowling arm (hehe)

If there has ever been an adventure that spoke to our soul, it is The Ellen Trout Zoo!    There are so many positive elements that we couldn’t be more excited to share this gem with you.

Unlike, some other zoos that we’ve explored, Ellen Trout lets you get up close and personal with the animals. The Hippos had an above ground & underwater view as well, which we thought was super cool! We saw monkeys, kangaroos, giant turtles, snakes, koi fish, and much much more!

img_8703

For obvious reasons, the lions, giraffes, jaguars and etc are more secure, but there was a good view for every animal. Between all of the greenery and roaming animals, we just felt like we were in an actual jungle the entire time. As if we had traveled to another country to go on a safari.

One of the biggest highlights were all of the peacocks roaming all about, strutting their stuff, haha! Watching the male peacocks try to impress the females was hilarious, they literally “shake their tail feathers”!! We even witnessed some of the males getting very territorial and even fighting a bit.

Seri’s main mission was to touch one, and as you can see that sweet peacock finally let her. Some of the others weren’t so accommodating…

img_8705-1

By the giraffes, rhinos & a couple other exhibits were tables and chairs. We took full advantage of them for snack, water & relaxation breaks. And it didn’t hurt that there was an awesome view at each stopping point. You can sit and enjoy a break while watching different animals roam about!

img_8732-1

Although, we picked an amazing 75 degree day to go on this adventure, there is so much shading from the trees, too much sun wouldn’t ever be an issue!
